Before You Go: 5 things to do before you leave for the summer

The days are getting longer and warmer, summer is around the corner and some of you will even be saying goodbye to the University of Bristol. Whether you’re leaving for good, or coming back again in the Autumn, there are several things you could do before the summer to help you get where you want to be.

  1. Plan your career

If you don’t have any clear idea what you want to do after university, then let us help you to get the foundations in place, so that you can begin to identify the options of most interest. If this sounds a little daunting, don’t despair – our ‘Confused about your future career?’ workshops explain everything and provide you with friendly support from our careers experts.

  1. Get experience

The summer vacation is an ideal time to get an internship or work experience. Remember that it’s a competitive world out there and many employers tell us that graduates who have no previous work experience are unlikely to be successful during the selection process. It isn’t too late – our ‘Work This Way’ internship programme has seven-week internships for finalists with many leading to permanent positions upon completion.

  1. Explore further study

Many careers can benefit from further study and for some careers it can even be a necessity. If you’re considering further study, it can be helpful to recognise why you want to do it, what the routes are and how you can make a successful application. These insights are all provided in our “Is postgraduate study for me?” Quickfix session.

  1. Perfect your applications

Whether you need a CV and cover letter for a last minute speculative application to employers for summer internships, or you want help with your application for an amazing graduate job, our Quickfixes, workshops and one-to-one CV/application review appointments can help.

  1. Perfect your interview techniques

For finalists, our Bootcamp even gives you the opportunity to practise answering competency based questions, whilst our Interview Skills workshop provides an overview of the interview experience, from start to finish. You can also use our on-line interview simulator for further practice.
