As well as coming back to class ready for the new academic year, it’s also a time for moving into new houses and getting to know new housemates. The student rental market has a bad rep, and runners up from last year’sNew Enterprise Competitionaim to tackle this: MeetHYBR. We spoke with their founder, Hannah to find out what they’ve been up to.
Describe your business to us in a nutshell.
HYBR is an online marketplace for student accommodation that connects students directly to landlords, cutting out the traditional letting agent. Our mission is to provide an affordable landlord solution and support first-time renters throughout their rental journey.
Where did the idea of HYBR come from?
University is some of the best years of young adults’ lives and one hugely exciting aspect of this is moving in withfriends. My co-founder and I reflected on our positive rental experiences with Airbnb, andwe realised renting a house is a part of the excitement of moving away. The PLUS Award has certainly grown and evolved in the past decade; In its pilot year, 165 students achieved the PLUS Award, since then over 5,000 students have achieved it. Another 800 have finished so far this year, persevering to bag their Award despite changing circumstances!(more…)
Bristol Mentors pairs successful student candidates with an alumni mentor who will provide careers support and guidance throughout the academic year. The programme is now open for applications for our 2020/21 cohort.
“Bristol Mentors was a really unique experience, primarily because of the attention to detail that had gone into its organisation and planning. It was clear that a lot of thought and effort had gone into ensuring that my peers and I were paired with someone who could really support us in our career aspirations.
Basecamp caught up with University of Bristol alumni Adam Chambers, who has start-up business; Applichat. Adam won the Development Stage of the New Enterprise Competition and has shared some of his experiences below.
In a nutshell, what’s your business idea?
Applichat source, automatically pre-screen, then assign job candidates from Facebook and Instagram to recruiters’ workflows.

Actuation Lab is now 4 months into its year long membership of the SETsquared Bristol incubator that it won as runner-up in the NewEnterprise Competition. We have developed greatly as a business over that time and continue to refine our technology and market focus. We recently received a place on the Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research (ICURe) InnovateUK program which is providing us with funding and the ability to further explore market opportunities.(more…)
