Through the Bristol Skills Accelerator, students first complete an online training programme designed to build the skills and knowledge needed for the workplace. They then have the opportunity to put this learning into practice by working on project placements with real SMEs.
As she prepared to graduate this summer with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance, Sunwoo took on a placement with Streams Learning Hub through the Bristol Skills Accelerator – an experience she was keen to share with us.

Can you describe your project focus?
Our initial project aimed to explore AI tools for self-directed learning, such as ChatGPT and Goblin Tools, by evaluating their features and potential pitfalls. However, after gathering insights from potential student users, we decided to expand our focus. We introduced additional tools, explored how to use them effectively, and highlighted possible risks like AI hallucination. We also created a visual presentation designed with neurodivergent-friendly features in mind.
What was the biggest challenge your team faced?
One of the main challenges we faced was deciding on the scope and depth of our final output, especially since there were no strict guidelines. This challenge arose not from a lack of ideas, but rather the opposite. Every team member was highly engaged, proactive, and brought diverse perspectives to the project, which led to an overflow of ideas we wanted to include. We held several online meetings to align our vision and make sure everyone’s input was reflected. It was a valuable experience working with such responsive and enthusiastic teammates.
What insight did you gain from the experience?
On a personal level, I’m used to taking a leadership role, but this time I learned how to be a supportive team member not just a leader. It gave me a chance to practice effective communication and negotiation, especially when working with a team full of strong opinions.
What would you say to students considering this kind of programme?
Regardless of your degree or career aspirations, teamwork and communication are essential skills in today’s world. I used to think I was already good at group work, but this experience showed me that there’s always more to learn. Even if you know your strengths, skills can always be developed or discovered but that only happens when you put them into action. If you want more experience or hope to grow your skills, this programme is a great place to start.
