Hear from the employer: work experience with a purpose – interning at Not Impossible

Hi, I’m Emma. If you’re reading this, you’re probably looking for work experience.

And guess what? You’re in the right place. We’re Not Impossible – a work experience matching platform helping 16 – 25 year olds from less-advantaged backgrounds find work that matters to them.

We pair young people with employees who share passions and personality for what we call a ‘microplacement’ – a personalised 1-hour to 1-day experience that builds connections, confidence and clarity about your future.

Who are Not Impossible?

We launched Not Impossible in 2024 after working together at Bristol B Corp Pukka Herbs, channelling our own experiences of social mobility into our mission. Since then, we’ve partnered closely with the Careers Service and have hosted 2 interns through the SME Internship Scheme – both of whom have made a lasting impact on our work and culture.

What are the benefits of taking part in the SME Internship Scheme with us?

As a small, purpose-led start-up, we look for students who connect with our mission and want to contribute ideas to a growing organisation. Interns work on real projects – from social media and communications, to process design and research – developing practical experience and essential skills in problem solving, planning and teamwork.

This workplace experience can support you, as a student, to build your confidence in the world of work. Whilst we still have an application process, we provide less competitive opportunities than some of the larger recruiters and offer you insight into what it is like to work with a Small or Medium Enterprise (SME) in Bristol.

So how exactly does the application and onboarding process work?

Our application process is simple: we ask why you’re interested in the role and what you hope to gain. We will also ask you to prepare a short task such as a mini presentation. We hope that this process helps ensure a good mutual fit.

Once selected, interns complete onboarding (including contracts and introductions) and we agree a working pattern around your studies. This can be flexible and we hope to work together to build a working pattern that works for both parties involved.

When it comes to the day to day and management of your work, we provide regular check-ins which offer you the space for feedback and support. This should help with your personal and professional development both in your internship, and beyond.

Still unsure?

We believe that work plays a vital role in supporting mental health – offering purpose, community and a routine. The SME Internship Scheme is a brilliant way to build all three, and we’re always excited to welcome students who want to make a difference with Not Impossible.
