Are you a student in the arts, humanities, or social sciences wondering what comes next after graduation?

You’re not alone. Many students share the same questions: What career paths are open to me? Where do I start? The Expansive Futures event series is designed to answer those questions and more.

Organised by your Careers Service in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences, this series explores opportunities that value the unique perspectives and skills developed through your studies. Through a mix of panel events featuring alumni and local employers you’ll gain practical insights, hear real-life stories, and discover how your degree can open doors to exciting and meaningful careers.

What’s On?

The series runs for over a month and covers a range of industries and roles. Whether you’re passionate about writing, curious about heritage, or considering a career in policy, there’s something for everyone. Follow the links to learn more about individual events and our panellists:

What Makes These Events Special?

Most sessions are panel discussions featuring University of Bristol alumni and local employers, offering authentic perspectives on career journeys. These conversations go beyond job descriptions: they delve into the realities of working in these fields, the skills that matter, and the strategies for breaking into competitive industries.

One of the most powerful themes running through the series is the concept of “non-linear careers.” More often than not there isn’t a rigid ladder of success. Instead, today’s career paths are dynamic, flexible, and full of opportunities to pivot and grow. Alumni stories illustrate how our graduates have thrived in roles across marketing, publishing, heritage, and even tech, often in ways they never imagined during their studies.

How Will You Benefit?

By attending Expansive Futures, you’ll:

  • Discover career options you may not have considered.
  • Learn practical tips for applications, interviews, and networking.
  • Gain confidence to pursue opportunities, possibly even those outside your comfort zone.
  • Connect with professionals who understand the value of your degree.

But don’t take our word for it: here is what one of our previous attendees said about the series:

“If I was to describe Expansive Futures in one word it would be: ‘insightful’. Not only is the information you gain from just going enough to inspire change but, engaging critically with the advice and using it to enhance your journey, may be life changing.
