Curious about networking and discovering career paths you’ve never considered? Get Hired, our spring careers fair, is happening on Wednesday 19 March from 12:30 pm to 4 pm at Bristol Beacon.
How to make the most of Get Hired?

Hi, I’m Dirthaa Karunanidhi, a Careers Ambassador for almost two years, and I understand the excitement and uncertainty that comes with career planning.
I’ve heard students say, “I just leave careers fairs with a tote bag full of pens.” Job hunting can feel frustrating. But what if it didn’t have to be?
No matter where you are in your career journey, this is your chance to connect with employers and get insights into different industries.
Do you know what you want to do? Fantastic! Or do you feel lost, asking yourself, “What am I going to do with my life?” You’re not alone.
When you think of “careers fair”, which of these best describes your feelings?
- Excited? You’re ready to make connections!
- Hopeful? Love the optimism.
- Socially anxious? Totally understandable.
- Stressed? Been there. But don’t worry, we’re going to make it fun.
Think of it like planning a trip. You’d research your destination, plan your route, and step outside your comfort zone to try something new. With preparation, you can turn this into a valuable experience.
Before the fair…
1. Download the Careers Fair Plus App on your phone

The CareerFairPlus App has got an interactive map and a list of employers at the fair, filters by industry, and even shows if they’re hiring or offer visa sponsorship. It saves you time and stress!
2. Do your research
With your employer list ready, it’s time to research! Look into what they do and what excites you about them. Check their website and social media for insights on projects and campaigns. Need help? Explore our employer research guide or join an ‘Intro to Get Hired’ session on Thursday 13 March (in-person) or Tuesday 18 March (virtual).
On the day…
1. Dress smart and comfortable
You’ll be on your feet all day, so wear comfortable shoes. Keep your outfit professional yet easy to move in. Bonus points for rocking a look that’s true to you and don’t forget to wear your UCard!
2. What to say
Face-to-face conversations showcase your enthusiasm in ways applications can’t. Employers value prepared students, so ask open-ended questions like, “What’s your experience at the company?” to show genuine interest.
Maintain eye contact, smile, and listen as much as you speak. Stay polite, friendly, and confident—deep breaths and hydration help too! Want more questions? Check out our careers fair guide.

3. Feeling anxious?
It’s normal! Employers aren’t there to intimidate, they’re there to meet the next superstar, and that could be you! If you feel unsure, start with employers that feel less intimidating and work your way up or talk to someone from Careers Service on the ground floor.
P.S I highly recommend watching this 9-minute TEDx Talk by Isaac Serwanga called The 3 Bones of Networking for Student Success
4. Awkward ending a conversation?
Ending a conversation can be just as tricky as starting one! Thank the employer for their time and ask if they’d like to connect on LinkedIn. If not, no worries! Keep your profile updated (grab a free LinkedIn headshot at the fair) so you can follow up with others whilst they still remember you.
