Reflections on my summer internship at EY

EY (Ernst & Young) is a global professional services firm that provides audit, consulting, tax, and advisory services to businesses and organisations worldwide.

Maddy Allam, a current student at the University of Bristol, recently joined EY on a paid, four-week Audit Summer Internship Programme.

We caught up with Maddy to find out more about her experience.

Application process

I first saw this opportunity advertised on websites such as Gradcracker and Brightnetwork. For me, the application process was relatively quick and easy to navigate, completing an application form and partaking in several online assessments. For future students looking to apply, I would advise applying early, giving yourself enough time to complete the application process whilst continuing your studies!

Skills and learning

Going into the internship, the ability to communicate and willingness to learn were probably the most important skills needed to make the most out of the experience. Over the month, the teamworking aspect really allowed me to learn how to efficiently split my time across different tasks for different people. As the weeks went on, I was given more responsibility with tasks I had done before, being trusted that I had previously understood how to get started on the task.

Work environment

The work environment was very welcoming with everybody being very kind and ensuring I knew I could come to them for help. The work culture itself was a lot more relaxed than I expected, with various social events being run, and an overall effort in making sure everyone was involved in any events.

Memorable experiences

My most memorable experience was the sports day; it was a really fun opportunity to get to know everyone better outside of the office environment and was a fun break from work!

Future plans

For me it has been a great insight into the working environment within professional services and has solidified my interest in pursuing a career into accounting. I would recommend this experience to anyone considering a job in finance or even anyone unsure of what they want to do as it offers a great insight into the working world.

Final thoughts

My advice for future interns would be to throw yourself into the experience as much as possible, don’t be afraid to ask questions and simply use this period as a trial to see if accountancy is right for you.
