My SME Internship: Charlie – Acer Ecology

Hello, my name is Charlie. After completing my final-year exams for my undergraduate Biology degree I had the opportunity to intern with Acer Ecology, an ecological and wildlife consultancy, as an Assistant Ecologist.

My experience

This role involved producing high-quality ecological reports for clients, ranging from Preliminary Ecological Appraisals to protected species licences, and conducting field work in the areas surrounding Bristol and Cardiff, including bat dusk emergence surveys and Great Crested Newt eDNA tests. It offered a hybrid and highly flexible working arrangement, combining office-based work in Cardiff, remote work from home, and regular site visits.

A photo of Charlie sat in a camping chair outdoors, holding a bat detector, and with paper on her lap to record her findings. From the light it looks like it was taken in the evening.

Charlie equipped with a bat frequency detector and infrared camera, conducting a dusk emergence survey in Somerset to determine the presence of bats in a workshop building.

As an Assistant Ecologist I was able to apply the knowledge I gained during my degree at Bristol in novel and practical ways, contributing to real-world conservation efforts. Although the reporting style differed from previous academic writing I have produced, I was well supported by my colleagues and adapted well.

Overall, this internship enabled me to connect with like-minded individuals, strengthen my environmental skills and confidence in my abilities, and reaffirm my strong passion for conservation work.

My top tips

  • Chat to the Careers Service about your emails to SMEs or applications for internships – they’re super helpful and can really help you sharpen up what you’re sending.
  • Take time to understand the working style and expectations of the role beforehand. Is remote work an option? Will you need to travel to sites? Knowing this in advance will help you prepare and avoid any surprises!
  • Enjoy it! Interning is meant to be a valuable and fun experience that gives you a taste of specific industry and roles.

My SME Internship: Lilian – Tabb Hub

My name is Lilian, an Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis MSc Student at the University of Bristol.

A photo of Lilian, smartly dressed and smiling at the camera.

When I started my internship at Tabb Hub, I didn’t quite know what to expect, except maybe I’d learn how a small creative business runs in the heart of Bristol. What I didn’t anticipate was how much I’d grow, laugh, tinker, network, and learn, all at once.

My SME Internship: Leo – Kiki

Hi, I’m Leo. In my third year of studying Computer Science with Innovation, I completed my SME Internship as an App Developer at Kiki, an SME that has created an AI-powered mobile app for family management.

The internship was fully remote, so I could work from home on my laptop and optionally from university when needed. My main task was to use FlutterFlow, a low-code app development tool, to build the calendar and event section of the Kiki app.

My SME Internship: Evie – BRICKS

I’m Evie, a recent graduate in History of Art. I had the opportunity to carry out a 4-week Internship as an Editorial Assistant at BRICKS Magazine, a queer and independent publication exploring social-political issues within fashion, music, arts and culture.

A picture of Evie, smiling outside.

After graduating, I knew I wanted to gain further experience in media and publishing. However, I struggled to find any advertised internship schemes that suited me, and all the ones I resonated with seemed very cut-throat and competitive.

Deciding to use the SME Internship Scheme to my advantage, I contacted one of my favourite Indie Publications I have followed for some time – BRICKS Magazine. Being a small business with only 2 full-time employees, they were keen for the help so jumped at the opportunity straight away!

Sometimes an email can change everything: my path to a placement at DCA Design

Hi, I’m Anna, a Trainee Mechanical Engineer at DCA Design International – and just a year ago, I was a Bristol second-year student, trying to figure out how to secure a Year in Industry placement. Today, I want to share how attending one unexpected event (found through my inbox!) ended up shaping my career

A photo of Anna, taken outside. There are trees behind her, and she's smiling at the camera.

I began my Mechanical Engineering degree at Bristol after suspending my studies in Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict. Very early on, I discovered the Year in Industry programme and instantly loved the idea.

For me, it offered the chance to understand what engineering is like in real life, to adjust my expectations, and to get a sense of what I actually want to specialise in before choosing third and fourth year units. Plus, working on real client projects sounded far more meaningful than another year of exams.

I worked for the company for 16 hours a week between November 2024 and February 2025.

Don’t forget your ‘soft skills’ on your CV

Hi, I’m Maisie, a Senior Fire Engineer at OFR Consultants. Fire engineering is a discipline within the built environment – we work with clients, architects, engineers and consultants to bring buildings to life.

A photo of Maisie standing outside smiling,

I was just starting my final year of an Integrated Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol when I realised I needed to decide what I wanted to do next – and honestly I had no idea. I knew what I didn’t like, but wasn’t sure what I did like! I knew I liked talking to people and engaging with real world projects so I started looking at consultancy, found fire engineering by accident and it’s been the best career for me. I love my role and am so glad I ended up here, but looking back I wish I’d had a little confidence in my ‘soft skills’.
