Harvey, one of Floom’s directors, tells us his story of graduating from the University of Bristol and how his degree inspired him to create Floom as a vehicle for businesses to share their sustainability stories authentically and impactfully.

Can you tell us a bit about your start-up?

Our team offers a unique blend of experience, combining my in-depth sustainability knowledge from completing an MSc in Environmental Policy at Bristol University in 2022, with fellow Director, Fin’s expertise in video production and documentary making.

We specialise in creating narratives for brands that have their values rooted in environmental and ethical consciousness.

In September 2024, Floom became B Corp Certified, a significant milestone reflecting our dedication to meeting high social and environmental performance standards.

Our collaborative approach ensures businesses can access the best of both worlds: striking visuals and data-driven marketing that maximise a brand’s reach and impact.

How did the Basecamp Enterprise Team help you with your start-up?

The Basecamp Enterprise Team provided invaluable support as we navigated the start-up phase of Floom Creative. Their guidance was instrumental in helping us shape our sustainability-focused business model, connect with mentors in the field, and access resources that were critical in our early growth.

Through the Basecamp programme, we received a £1,000 grant, which we invested in essential camera equipment. We could also hire a social media marketing intern for 300 hours on the programme, both vital in expanding our reach and delivering top-quality content for our clients.

The team’s encouragement and expertise helped us believe in our vision and refine the strategies that have since become the foundation of Floom.

What would you say to someone thinking about entering the New Enterprise Competition?

If you’re considering the New Enterprise Competition, I’d say go for it! The experience itself is transformative. You learn so much about your business model, how to communicate your vision, and the practical steps needed to make it a reality. Winning or not, participating opens doors to mentorship, builds your network, and gives you invaluable insights that will serve you well in any entrepreneurial journey. For us, the chance to put Floom’s purpose and potential in the spotlight was invaluable, and the skills and connections we gained continue to fuel our work.

How has your business idea evolved since you first began working on it?

The journey to founding Floom Creative began with a completely different concept. Initially, I launched My Fitness Advisor, a fitness directory and review platform designed to help people find trusted fitness services. After lockdown, I pivoted to support fitness businesses struggling to attract clients amid lockdowns and social restrictions. That experience taught me much about marketing and how crucial it is for companies to connect with the right audiences.

Through that work, I discovered a genuine passion for helping brands find and engage customers, eventually leading me to expand into a marketing agency.

As Floom took shape, we initially worked across various industries, from fitness to retail, learning what worked for different types of brands and refining our approach. Over time, however, it became clear that my real drive was to support businesses that aligned with my sustainability and social impact values.

We’re also not afraid to branch out to other industries to broaden our impact and creative reach. This year, for example, we shot a music video, which allowed us to apply our storytelling skills in a completely new space. This versatility allows us to take on creative challenges that deepen our expertise while staying true to our mission.
