The Outstanding PLUS Awards recognise the broad range of outstanding contributions Bristol PLUS Award achievers make to their extracurricular activity each year.
This year, judges revealed 1 winner in each category at a fantastic celebration event at Bristol Beacon, attended by Bristol PLUS Award achievers and PLUS endorsing employers.
The judges were so impressed by the high quality of this year’s nominations, and awarded an honourable mention to the 10 students who were also shortlisted. We are excited to share with you now these outstanding students!
Better World
Brief: Contribute to tackling global challenges in a local or global context, these should be linked to the United National Sustainable Development Goals.

Nushaba Hajiyeva – Management (Project Management) (MSc)
‘As a Young European Ambassador, I advocated for the welfare of stray animals through the “Love, Pet, Adopt” campaign, leading the communications and logistics for managing the installation of 100+ shelter boxes in 5 cities of Azerbaijan.
These shelter boxes were produced by upcycling insulated delivery bags drawing attention to responsible production and sustainability.’
Shriya Pillay – Economics (BSc)
‘As president of Bristol University Women in Leadership, I organised the society’s first ever conference event around the theme of personal growth.
We connected students with female executives, providing insights and mentorship to support their career aspirations and help bridge gender gaps in workplaces and leadership roles.’

Change Maker
Brief: Create positive change in your workplace or university to benefit the organisation and its people.

Jane Brown – Childhood Studies (BSc)
‘During the Sustainable Futures programme, I was inspired by initiatives tackling food waste. This awareness led me to take direct action in my workplace at Center Parcs, where I have worked for many years.
I identified significant food waste issues, taking proactive steps to implement sustainable changes, demonstrating my dedication to making a tangible impact.’
Selina Weng Hei Lam – Sociology (MSc)
‘As President of MYLUK, I have fostered a strong community for Macau students in the UK by organising networking events, career talks, and cultural exchanges.
Through initiatives like the Macau photo exhibition and Portugal exchange trip, I have created lasting opportunities for students to connect, grow, and celebrate their heritage while studying abroad.’


Kerry Shen – Chemistry with Industrial Experience (MSci)
‘As a pharmaceutical researcher at PharmaConsulta Ltd., I streamlined drug safety monitoring processes in the EU and UK markets by optimising literature reviews, implementing AI-driven invoice analysis, and improving data management.
My innovations enhanced efficiency in data analysis, regulatory compliance, and industry engagement, demonstrating my ability to drive meaningful change in pharmaceutical quality assurance.’
Civic Superstar
Brief: Be a community hero and make a positive difference to the people you serve, such as peers or customers.
Sonal Agarwal – Data Science (MSc)
‘As an Olio Volunteer, I collected surplus food from businesses like Tesco and Sainsbury’s and distributed it to homeless individuals and shelters in Bristol.
Beyond food, I provided companionship, emotional support, and dignity to those often ignored, building strong community connections and creating a lasting impact on those facing the toughest times.’

Innovation
Brief: develop a new idea, such as a product or service, in response to a real-world problem or need.

Johnny Miller – Geography with Study Abroad in a Modern Language (BSc)
‘When volunteering for my local council, I created a plan for a new bus service for my village to try and fix the problem of cuts and changes which had left us cut off.
I was able to present my idea to the council, who are considering options for my village.’
Partnerships Builder
Brief: Build relationships with multiple stakeholders and work in partnership to reach a common goal.
Niharika Deokar – Data Science (MSc)
‘As an intern at Fidelis AI, I work closely with my co-interns, the CEO and our company mentor. Realising the challenges of a pre-seed startup, I initiate team-building activities to promote understanding, transparency and stronger collaboration.
Through collaborative problem-solving and proactive communication, I’ve acted as a partnership builder and helped ensure that we work efficiently towards achieving our shared common goal.’


Alexander Nunn – Law (MA)
‘As Sponsorship and Fundraising Officer, I secured vital resources and financial support for the boat club.
By forging strong, external partnerships, resources can be redirected towards subsidising rowing costs and improving facilities, promoting inclusivity and accessibility for university students.’
Wellbeing Champion
Anastasiia Makhorkina – Psychology of Education BPS (MSc)
‘In my volunteer role with an inclusive climbing charity, I help young people with disabilities and impairments engage in regular climbing sessions, focusing on well-being, confidence, and self-esteem.
Working alongside a dedicated team of experienced climbers, I remove barriers between young people and climbing by offering tailored sessions that meet each individual’s needs.’
