Lucy Dean, Bristol graduate and current AlphaSight Capital Marketing manager, talked to us about her time at Bristol, and life in her current role.

Lucy Dean – Manager, Capital Markets

I studied Politics and Spanish at the University of Bristol from 2014 to 2018 and started working at AlphaSights the summer I graduated. I spent some of the best years of my life at Bristol because I made lifelong friends and discovered who I was and what I wanted in the years to come.

I knew that, for my year abroad, I wanted to find an internship that would set me up well for finding a graduate role. Some of my jobs at Bristol included: selling BED Monday event tickets in the first year and running the show by my final year; reselling charity shop clothes from Gloucester Road on Depop, and teaching sailing down at the Docks. I secured an internship at Deloitte Consulting Group, Mexico City, where I worked for 9 months and then spent my third-year summer travelling through Central America.

When I came back, I was unsure what my next step would be. I knew the Big Four was not for me because of the slow-paced nature of the work and lack of early responsibility. During conversations at lunch at Beacon House, my friend spoke about his summer internship at AlphaSights and told me to apply as it sounded like something that matched what I was looking for. I was offered the job in the November of my final year and had therefore secured a role before I graduated which was a great feeling and I was very excited to come to London!

Working at AlphaSights

I have now been at AlphaSights for four years, where I sit on the Capital Markets team. I have been a manager for two years and absolutely love the challenge of running my own book of business and working with Associates to help them grow and develop. My ultimate mission is to ensure our clients are receiving the best service possible. I spend my time coaching individuals within my team, thinking about new ways to innovate the products and services we offer, and meeting with clients regularly.

In terms of the role, AlphaSights does what it says on the tin by propelling you into situations and experiences that will push you. To be successful, you must fundamentally enjoy achieving results and must seek great satisfaction from challenges. We are a high-growth company because of our winning culture and our agility to change. Working alongside our founders who set our vision inspires us and motivates us to reach ambitious goals. Bristol prepared me for this job because I was surrounded by ambitious and intelligent people who mirror the workforce at AlphaSights.

Top tips

My best piece of advice to those at university is that working in any job, whether it be at Boston Tea Party, The Brass Pig, or KPMG, will allow you to understand what you want from your first step into a career. I want to emphasize that it doesn’t matter if you have had experience in an investment bank or McDonald’s, what companies like AlphaSights want to see is grit, drive, and self-awareness.

Therefore, take every opportunity that you come across to learn about yourself. If you are interested in sales and communications and want to work in a metrics and results-driven environment, do consider AlphaSights.
