Bristol Pride is all about showcasing, celebrating and championing LGBTQIA+ equality.
In conjunction with Pride 2023, we caught up with two Bristol PLUS Award achievers to find out about the work they have done to champion LGBTQIA+ friendly spaces.
Audrey Lo connected with Bristol University’s TV Society (UBTV) to run a creative spaces campaign for LGBTQ+ History Month.
“Through Bristol Hub’s ‘LGBTQ+ Creative Spaces’ campaign, I hoped to create a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ students to showcase their artistic talents.
The campaign invited students to submit their artistic work, such as short films, poems, critical writings, and paintings.
The campaign team collaborated with UBTV to interview two talented student artists, Andrew Jones and Soph Robinson, to share what art means to them.
By providing a platform for LGBTQ+ students to express themselves creatively and share their experiences, the campaign allowed individuals to connect with each other through art and storytelling, helping to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusivity!”
Rahul Bhardwaj coordinated volunteering activities for the Pachamama Project, helping to create reusable sanitary pads for those experiencing period poverty.
“I invited students from many societies and networks, including the Volunteering and Fundraising Network, Equality & Diversity Network, and LGBTQ+ society, to help weave, stitch, and create reusable pads that would be transported to other parts of the world, wherever they are required.
During the event, we recognised that period poverty not only affects women, but all people who menstruate. The event culminated in a broader discussion about gender, sexuality and relationships, trying to break gender-based divides among society at large.”
