Graduate stories: my experience as a Hogan Lovells campus ambassador

Amrit is studying law at Bristol, and we recently caught up to hear about her experience working for Hogan Lovells and advice about applying for the campus ambassador opportunity.

Hi, I’m Amrit. The main role of a Hogan Lovells Campus Ambassador role is to act as the firm’s key representative on campus, promoting its opportunities. This involves organising and advertising events.

My favourite events have been the Meet the Campus Ambassadors event, as well as the Interactive Assessment Centre Workshop that I organised. This involved learning about the assessment centre process from future HL trainees who are currently in their final year of studies at Bristol.

Organising and attending events as campus ambassador means that I get the opportunity to engage with students to answer questions about the firm and application processes as well as building relationships with university societies.

As part of this process, not only do I liaise with and receive lots of support from the firm’s graduate recruitment team when planning events, but I also get the opportunity to provide the team with feedback about student engagement. I also get the opportunity to feature in and make social media content, further enhancing my engagement with the firm.

Being a HL campus ambassador has improved my networking skills as I have developed confidence in engaging with both students and firm contacts. This ties into how I have also developed my communication skills when managing and organising events.

Additionally, I have found that balancing this role with academic and extracurricular commitments has improved my time management skills and ability to prioritise.

My biggest tips to students interested in applying to Hogan Lovells is to thoroughly research the firm in order to effectively convey their interest. This involves learning about the firm’s practice areas, culture and recent deals. Attending events, both at the office and on campus, will certainly help with this as I have found that talking with people is the best way to get an insight into a law firm. Any insights gained can be used in applications to show how you and your skills align with the firm’s values.

This proactivity in attending events and engaging with firms links to the tip I would give to any student or graduate wanting to network with employers in the legal sector. I firmly believe that speaking with firm contacts and following up with them, for example by connecting with them on LinkedIn, is the best way to get involved in the legal sector. I also find that networking can be a learning tool and that conversations with legal professionals can enhance your commercial awareness and prepare you for future networking opportunities.
