Graduate Stories: Working as a graduate hardware engineer at Ocado Technology

Hi, I’m Louise, I graduated from the University of Bristol in 2022 and I now work at Ocado Technology as a Graduate Hardware Engineer.

My university experience

In 2018 I began studying for an integrated master’s degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The first three years of my degree were transformative in building my confidence and passion for engineering.

One of the best extra-curricular activities I did during my time at university was being a Course Representative as this helped me to get to know both my cohort and my lecturers. During my second year I also completed the Bristol PLUS Award, a programme organised by the Careers Service. The best thing I gained from this programme was learning how to articulate the value I had gained from my extra curricular experiences in my CV and in job interviews.

From Wills Memorial to the Palace of Westminster – my Civil Service Fast Stream journey

Hi, I’m Annie, a Bristol graduate (BA English, MSc Public Policy) currently working in the Ministry of Justice as part of the Civil Service Fast Stream graduate programme.

Back in 2018, when I decided to study English at Bristol, careers were the furthest thing from my mind. I was passionate about reading and literary history, especially the political contexts of my favourite novels, plays and poems, and knew that Bristol would be the perfect place to develop.

Graduate Stories: Working on the commercial graduate programme at INEOS

Luke graduated from Bristol with a Mechanical Engineering degree and now works at INEOS on the Commercial Graduate Programme. We recently caught up with Luke to hear about his experience working for INEOS and his advice for students who are starting their career.

Hi I’m Luke,

I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, but it didn’t take me long to realise that a traditional engineering career wasn’t quite what I was aiming for. While I was at Bristol, I explored various fields through different internships. Each role gave me a new perspective and showed me how the engineering world operates beyond the technical aspects. By the time I finished my degree, I knew I wanted to combine my engineering background with a focus on business and strategy.

Wellbeing in the workplace

The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day is ‘mental health at work’.

We spend much of our adult lives working, so it’s important that we choose workplaces and careers which don’t contribute to or create mental health problems.

An important part of looking after your mental health whilst at work is to make sure you are supporting your wellbeing.

Top tips for the Employer Showcase Careers Fair

Our 2-day Autumn Careers Fair is just around the corner! The Employer Showcase will take place on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 October. The event will run from 12:30 pm until 4 pm each day and will be held at the Bristol Beacon on Trenchard Street.

To help you make the most of the day, we have pulled together our top tips on how to prepare for the fair

  1. Download and use the Career Fair Plus app to make a plan of who to speak to

You can download CareerFairPlus on your phone before the event to access an interactive floorplan for both days, as well as the full list of employers, tips for the day and resources so that you can research in advance of attending. Use the inbuilt filters to find out which employers are targeting you, as well as those that sponsor visas, have South West opportunities and more.

Graduate Stories: My journey into the space industry

University of Bristol alumnus Will Booth, graduated in an MEng in Aerospace Engineering in 2022 and is now working for Airbus Defence and Space. We recently caught up with Will, to hear about his journey from graduating to working in the space industry.

Hi I’m Will,

As I reflect on my journey from the University of Bristol to my current role at Airbus Defence and Space, I appreciate how important my time at university was in shaping my career in the space industry. The exposure I gained during my studies, particularly through my fourth-year group design project (AVDASI4) and my third-year independent research project, simulating reusable launch vehicle landings, solidified my passion for working in the space sector. Through these projects, I discovered my love for complex spacecraft design and developed key contacts at Airbus, which would prove invaluable later on.

Challenges of tomorrow – festivals and events

Events are a major element of the UK economy, with an estimated £3.3 billion revenue in 2023.

We ran the “Challenges of tomorrow – festivals & events” panel to give students an insight into how to get into this exciting sector, with expert input from Pauline Bourdon, Stevie Lee-Bennett and Charlie Wall.

Here is a quick introduction to our panellists, their backgrounds, and current roles:

Pauline Bourdon is a Director at Soliphilia (a green touring & sustainability consultancy), a lecturer in event sustainability at BIMM Bristol, a sustainability consultant with UNSW Cardiff, and the Head of Sustainability & Social Cohesion at Team Love – an event production company producing 6 festivals a year including Love Saves the Day in Bristol, Silver Hayes at Glastonbury Festival and Waterworks, London.
