Hello, and happy Pride! Here at the Careers Service, we’d like to kickstart the University celebrations by giving you resources designed specifically to support our LGBTQ+ students and grads, from uni onwards!

It’s 2022, and employers (especially those huge corporations) love to shout their allyship from the rooftops – so what does it actually mean to be job seeking as an LGBTQ+ candidate, and how do you navigate it?

There are a few research methods at your disposal. Start by taking a look at the support offered to you at the Careers Service: a good first step is our guide on Support for: LGBT+ students.

Transform Case Studies: Unlocked

Since leaving Bristol…

I applied for Unlocked Graduates in my third year of University. At this point, though I had loved studying law, I knew I did not want to practice. I wanted to work directly with those affected by the criminal justice system and to change society for the better, still using my knowledge but via alternate means. I discovered the Unlocked Graduate Scheme in a careers email sent by the Law Department and was immediately interested given the scheme’s focus upon fostering social change within prisons in order to limit reoffending. I applied, thinking that I probably wouldn’t even get an interview and was surprised when I was contacted a few weeks after submitting my application to attend an assessment day.

From then onwards, I completed the recruitment process and was lucky enough to be placed within a Young Offenders Institution, working with incarcerated 15-18 year olds. (more…)

Meet Oscar, the PLUS achiever who helped fundraise £60,000 for charity!

The Bristol PLUS Award rewards students for taking part in extra-curricular activity alongside their studies. Every year, we are impressed by the variety of activities students use towards their PLUS, and the impact these activities have – both towards the local community, and towards the students’ personal and professional development.

To achieve his 70 hours, Oscar Oglina, a fifth-year medical student, was director of the Medical Student Charity Dance Production, CLIC, which broke fundraising records by raising over £60,000 for charity.  (more…)

My COVID-19 SME Internship: Alessia – i3Works

Alessia, a first-year postgraduate student participated in the COVID-19 SME Internship Scheme last spring. Here’s what she has to say about her experience. 

What was your role? 

During my 9-week internship at i3Works, I worked as a Marketing and Sales Support Intern for 15 hours a week, divided over three days. i3Works is a management consultancy and my main responsibilities for the first few weeks included learning how the company acquires new contracts, editing documents and case studies, and thinking of new ideas to implement in order to improve the consultancy’s marketing strategy. 2021 has undoubtedly been a weird year for job-seeking. It might even feel like looking for work is an almost impossible task. But is this really true?

Myth 1: There are no jobs to apply for

Contrary to popular belief, there are still plenty of brilliant opportunities out there, and the number is growing rapidly. According to the latest labour market information, UK businesses are currently reporting the fastest growth in activity for more than 20 years!  

There’s good news internationally too, with strong signs of an increase in opportunities in China, India, and the rest of the world for 2021/22.  

 Vacancies are being added almost every day to the Careers Service website.
