My COVID-19 SME Internship: Alessia – i3Works
Alessia, a first-year postgraduate student participated in the COVID-19 SME Internship Scheme last spring. Here’s what she has to say about her experience.
What was your role?
During my 9-week internship at i3Works, I worked as a Marketing and Sales Support Intern for 15 hours a week, divided over three days. i3Works is a management consultancy and my main responsibilities for the first few weeks included learning how the company acquires new contracts, editing documents and case studies, and thinking of new ideas to implement in order to improve the consultancy’s marketing strategy. My COVID-19 SME Internship: Ed – EcoStyle
Ed, a 4th year Engineering student worked for Ecostyle last Summer, a design and manufacture company. Ecostyle create interactive educational models to promote renewable energy and water efficiency. Ed secured his role by sourcing his own internship after hearing about the COVID-19 Internship scheme. Here’s what he had to say about the experience.
What was the aim of your internship?
To develop resources and product development concepts which enable socially distanced hands-on learning of renewable technologies, in a classroom or at home. The resources should encourage sales of EcoStyle products whilst promoting an incredibly vital industry and renewable STEM career path. (more…)
My COVID-19 SME Internship: Anouk – LikeToBe
Hi, my name is Anouk. I had just handed in my PhD thesis when I applied for the COVID-19 SME Internship as an Event Manager at a digital platform; LikeToBe. LikeToBe is an online network which helps introduce students to professional online networking and creates regular employer engagements through online careers talks, which are available to watch here.
The COVID-19 SME Internship Fund
We have launched a new internship fund to provide paid work experience of 4 weeks within UK-based small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The aim of this fund is to support organisations whilst providing opportunities for internships where you can make a difference. (more…)
My COVID-19 SME Internship: Katie – Brave Bold Drama
Hello, I’m Katie and I partook in a COVID-19 SME Internship from June to August 2020 with the Community Arts and Theatre company Brave Bold Drama based in Hartcliffe and Withywood, though I was working remotely. I was the Assistant Producer Intern and was primarily working on the Bristol and Bath Creative R+D ‘Expanded Performance’ Research project, of which Brave Bold Drama was an industry partner.
My COVID-19 SME Internship: Dan – St Werburghs City Farm
Hello! I’m Dan and I’m in my third year of studying History.
I recently undertook an SME Internship with St Werburghs City Farm (SWCF), a charity providing vital community services for people from all ages and backgrounds facing disadvantages by connecting them to their food in various ways.
My role as Communications and Engagement Intern involved considering how the farm engages with its visitors/audience in an impactful way and conducting research – and petting the farm animals! (more…)

Eveline has written about her recent internship at Tumelo, which was supported by our COVID-19 SME Internship Fund. The aim of this fund was to support local SMEs including charities, social enterprises and start-ups who are operating at maximum capacity as they respond to the challenges of Coronavirus, while giving students valuable and meaningful work experiences in a difficult economic climate. My COVID-19 SME Internship: Rosie - Airway Medical Ltd
Rosie, who was studying Biochemistry, has written about her recent Digital Marketing internship which was supported by our COVID-19 SME Internship Fund. The aim of this fund was to support local SMEs including charities, social enterprises and start-up who are operating at maximum capacity as they respond to the challenges of Coronavirus, while giving students valuable and meaningful work experience in a difficult economic climate.
Introduction
As part of the University of Bristol’s COVID-19 SME Internship Fund, I completed a placement with Airway Medical Ltd (AML), a Bristol-based, medical device start–up. The company produces Suction and Oxygen Therapy equipment such as the Airway Medical Suction Unit (AMSU™) for clearing blocked airways in emergency and chronic conditions. (more…)
