In March 2020, Rob Cooper a final year law student – and one of the Careers Service Welcome Desk Assistants – attended a workshop put on by Mind about preparing students to manage their mental health during the transition from studying to the workplace. We asked Rob to share his key takeaways from the workshop, here’s what he had to say.

I started with The Air Agents in June as part of the University of Bristol’s internship scheme. 
It seemed like a great opportunity to get some work experience in a field I was actually interested in – a welcome change from the plethora of ads for graduate schemes in recruitment or finance.
I’d always wanted to stay in Bristol after I graduated, having grown up locally, and had trawled through Indeed for hours, searching for a job which would be rewarding. The internship was a bit of a gamble, but I figured I would end up with experience that could only aid my job hunt. (more…)
Quite a few graduates tell us that they are concerned they haven’t got enough work experience to secure their ideal role. Sometimes they’re not considering everything they may have done previously – the summer retail job or that term-time bar position – which helped them develop some great transferable skills.
However, in some instances they may have a point. Some roles may require candidates to have quite specific experience in certain environments or with particular types of customer or stakeholder. (more…)
Why do so many careers fairs take place in the Autumn?
Simple: it’s when larger organisations’ graduate recruitment schemes are open for applications and they want to engage with as many potential candidates as possible. If so, we want to invite you to help us celebrate the ten year anniversary of the Awards! 
The Bristol PLUS Award started in 2009 as a way to reward students for developing extracurricular skills and experiences alongside their degrees, and help them articulate the value of that experience to employers. In ten years, the premise of the Award has not changed, though it has evolved in response to student feedback, university projects and labour market developments, to ensure that the Award remains credible and beneficial to every student who dedicates themselves to achieve it.
Here are just a few highlights:
For some of you, it won’t be long before you’ve completed your undergraduate studies here at the University of Bristol. Whilst a few of you may return to undertake further study, for most of you this will be the beginning of the next stage of your lives. Many of you will have been in education for the past 17 years, so entering the world of work may feel daunting.
Some of you might have secured a graduate career already, whilst others may be planning to study elsewhere. A few will be preparing to travel. Several of you might not have any plans. Everyone has their own unique situation, so we thought it would be helpful to remind you that we’ve got your back!
