Careers Support for Graduates
Don’t forget that as a graduate of the University of Bristol you can make use of all our careers support for up to three years after the end of your studies.
The graduate job market, much like the wider economy, has taken a big hit this year due to the effects of COVID-19, but many employers are still looking to recruit graduates. We are often greeted with surprise from both students and graduates visiting the Careers Service for the first time: “I never knew there was so much here!” and “I wish I had got in touch before now” are common reactions.
We also know that students are often reluctant to get in touch with us, feeling that they need to have a specific reason to talk to us – you don’t!
You may have seen articles in the UK press about how coronavirus is affecting the UK graduate job market. Broadly speaking it’s a mixed outlook, with some sectors like hospitality badly affected whereas others, like healthcare and social work, are more robust. You can read a useful summary on Prospects.
At Bristol, one in four of you now are from overseas, so we’re actively using our relationships with global recruitment platforms and employers to collate information on job markets outside of the UK.
We have launched a new internship fund to provide paid work experience of 4 weeks within Bristol-based small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
In March 2020, Rob Cooper a final year law student – and one of the Careers Service Welcome Desk Assistants – attended a workshop put on by Mind about preparing students to manage their mental health during the transition from studying to the workplace. We asked Rob to share his key takeaways from the workshop, here’s what he had to say.

I started with The Air Agents in June as part of the University of Bristol’s internship scheme. 
It seemed like a great opportunity to get some work experience in a field I was actually interested in – a welcome change from the plethora of ads for graduate schemes in recruitment or finance.
I’d always wanted to stay in Bristol after I graduated, having grown up locally, and had trawled through Indeed for hours, searching for a job which would be rewarding. The internship was a bit of a gamble, but I figured I would end up with experience that could only aid my job hunt. (more…)
