LGBTQ+ careers support and advice

Hello, and happy Pride! Here at the Careers Service, we’d like to kickstart the University celebrations by giving you resources designed specifically to support our LGBTQ+ students and grads, from uni onwards!

It’s 2022, and employers (especially those huge corporations) love to shout their allyship from the rooftops – so what does it actually mean to be job seeking as an LGBTQ+ candidate, and how do you navigate it?

There are a few research methods at your disposal. Start by taking a look at the support offered to you at the Careers Service: a good first step is our guide on Support for: LGBT+ students.

Get Hired! After the fair.

We welcomed over 1200 of you to Bristol Beacon for Get Hired! on Wednesday 4 May.

Watching you all network with employers and getting to give you face-to-face careers advice was a real treat; we are so happy to have in-person events back.

Attending Get Hired! is just the beginning though; It’s what you do after the fair that can maximise your chances of growing your network, finding a mentor, or securing a coveted graduate role. The employers at Get Hired! were blown away by the calibre of students attending, so it’s important to capitalise on your dazzling networking skills and keep that momentum going. (more…)

Get Hired! In-person careers fairs are BACK!

Cressida, year 2 Law (MA), has been working as a Career Peer Support Assistant at the Careers Service since September 2021. She has worked predominantly with the Employer Engagement Team, which build relationships with employers and create networking and job hunting opportunities for you through careers fairs, skills sessions, and much more.

My SME Internship: Nada – Deki

Hi, I’m Nada, my internship role was as a Fundraising Research Assistant with the International Development charity, Deki. I contributed to the Fundraising Team primarily by conducting background research into Trusts and Foundations which was the basis for other team members to make grant applications.

My SME Internship: Anastasiia – Altuity Solutions

As students, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to succeed.

The job market is extremely competitive, and often, recruiters already expect you to have work experience when you graduate. So, many of us spend the holidays searching for vacation schemes and internships, myself included. During this winter vacation, I was looking for opportunities to boost my CV when I stumbled across the SME Internship Scheme. It was truly the perfect opportunity because you are able to gain some experience working remotely whilst also getting paid for it.

Case Study: Senmag Robotics’s experience with IKEEP

What is IKEEP? 

The IKEEP Programme consists of high-quality knowledge exchange opportunities, providing fresh perspectives and skills to enable regional businesses to grow while honing the talent of future graduates. 

Students involved will have participated in online training in a range of business areas such as managing innovation, business model development and project management. Student teams are ready to be placed within a company to develop business model solutions, improve market awareness and more! 

Senmag Robotics’s Experience with IKEEP 

Senmag Robotics took part in the IKEEP Programme this year. The student team, matched to this business, carried out market research to evaluate the most suitable markets and potential customers/early adopters for their product. They were also involved in the company’s website design, implementing improvements using HTML and CSS. 

Spyros Lavetiz, the CEO and Co-founder of Senmag Robotics

Senmag Robotics is a Bristol-based start-up and New Enterprise Competition finalist producing affordable haptic feedback technology, which allows a user to physically interact with computer simulations, making environments and objects in AR/VR feel solid. 

Spyros Lavetiz is the CEO and Co-founder of Senmag Robotics and has recently completed his final year of a master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Bristol.
